The Sorrentine Peninsula

Sorrento peninsula has a landscape unique in the world, where low and high hills, deep valleys and majestic mountains alternate, where the man’s work – who levelled even the most impervious areas, transforming them in the famous terraces degrading towards the sea, on which he cultivated orange and lemon trees, olive groves and vineyards – has been grandiose. These are the delightful gardens that in spring time exhale a stirring scent of orange – blossom. The mild and dry climate for most part of the year makes Sorrento peninsula the ideal destination in every season.

Place of interest

The old town still shows the path of orthogonal streets of Roman origin with thistles and decumani, while to the mountain is surrounded by sixteenth century walls. They are the Cathedral, rebuilt in the fifteenth century, with neo-Gothic facade, and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, with a remarkable fourteenth-century cloister with Arabian style arches that are interwoven on orthogonal pillars.

The liqueurs of the coast

In the Land of Mermaids there is a delicious production of typically local liqueurs, infusions and rosolios. Besides the famous limocello, in fact, it is possible to taste the Nocillo, the Fragolino and the Finocchietto.
Among the typical local products of Sorrento and its Coast, the limoncello is undoubtedly the most well-known and appreciated alcoholic drink.

Dishes alla Sorrentina

Gnocchi and escalopes alla Sorrentina share the use of typical local tomatoes and of fiordilatte (a type of fresh milk cheese) coming from the Lattari Mounts and occupy a relevant place in the local tradition, but sea specialities play the role of “main course”.

History, Art and Culture

his was the time when the tourism vocation of the area was born and was established with its inclusion in the so-called “Grand Tour”. A journey through the most important Italian sites that every young European noble of the time had to make to complete his cultural, historical and literary formation. Important guests such as Byron, Keats, Scott, Dickens, Goethe, Wagner, Ibsen and Nietzsche, among the most famous, came to stay in Sorrento looking for sun and inspiration.
